Race Overview

Oman Desert Challenge (ODC) is a multi stage trail race, covering roughly 250km over 5 days. This is high endurance ultra running through some of the most scenic yet challenging areas in the Middle East.

Self Sufficient Remote and Untouched

Competitors have to carry their kit and food in their backpacks during each stage of their epic journey. It is a self sufficient event so competitors are on their own when it comes to food and equipment.

The only outside assistance will be from the water points along the way and in the race camps each night. Medical assistance will also be readily available for those in need.

Competitors will race across mountains and narrow rocky passes, eventually reaching an altitude of 2,000 metres during the mountain stages. The route is totally off the beaten track and will follow trails made by the locals and resident wildlife.

When reaching the Wahiba Sand Sea, competitors will have to keep their wits about them in order to successfully navigate through the final stage.

Magnificent Al Hajar Mountains Wahiba Sand Sea

During the mountain stages, the race camp each night will be situated at a Wadi along the route. A pretty and relaxing spot, the wadi is known for its green and unspoilt surroundings, dense vegetation and caves, not to mention its wild life.

Our local Arabic guides will be readily available to inform you about the historic sites and areas which you raced through during the day's stage. The camp fire circles will be alive with story swopping and banter about the happenings during the stage and the challenge that still lies ahead.

The Wahiba Sands, or Ramlat al-Wahiba, are a region of desert in Oman. The region is named for the Wahiba tribe. The area is defined by a boundary of 180 kilometers north to south and 80 kilometers east to west, with an area of 12,500 square kilometers.

It is a vast mass of red and white sand, 140 km by 80km, with dunes rising up to 150 meters. At times the dunes reflect a beautiful golden shimmer. There is a scattering of Bedouin camps, as Bedouin herders still wander from waterhole to waterhole, and the sands actually contain quite a variety of terrain and vegetation.
